Lee Friedlander

I am a huge fan of Lee Friedlander's work. All his images have such great composition, detail, and lighting. One of my favorite things about his images is the fact that each of the photos tells a story. There is so much depth and thought behind everything he creates. He works a lot with shadows and reflections which, I now know from experience, can be very difficult with a film camera. It isn't easy to create such a crisp and detailed image with a film camera and dark room. His work is very inspiring.

The first image shows a reflection. I love how you can see parts from inside the glass, and the reflection. I find it very impressive that he was able to capture such great detail in the television. In my opinion, the purpose of this image is to show the scenery and surrounding of a photographer while creating their work. The reflection allows us to understand how he holds the camera, the environment he is in, and the emotions he's feeling.

The second picture is such a story telling piece. It seems like a simple picture of a shadow on a girls back, but to me its much more. I'm not sure what he was going for exactly but it is up to anyone's interpretations. To me it seems like its the feeling of a burden you can't get rid of. The image of a shadow constantly on her back shows how she feels like she can never get rid of her negativity or possibly a person that is weighing her down. Overall, this image is full of beauty, creativity, and thought.

The last image is very simple. I enjoy this photo because it shines light on such an ordinary thing. It seems just as simple as taking a snapshot of people, but the details in the image are perfectly portrayed. The girl in the front is the center of interest and it follows the rule of thirds. The wind in her hair and the phone to her ear show that she is focused on herself and is very preoccupied despite the many people around her. The crowd in the back all minding their own business and not focusing on one specific thing show the chaos and business of everyday life.(posted on 2/23/22)
