Duane Michals
Duane Michals is a well known film portrait photographer. He is known for his images that show human emotion and philosophy. In a lot of his work he includes double exposures. He has mastered the world of portrait photography and his art inspires many.
The first image is one of my favorites. I am very curious as to how he accomplished this illusion. I am not sure how he faded the man with the curtain and id love to see the process that went behind this photo. It might have been a double exposure or some type of movement while the shutter lens was open. My interpretation of this photo is that it is someone fading away. The subject seems lonely and old. To me it looks as though he is reminiscing on the past and he is looking at himself in the mirror watching himself fade away.
I love the second image. This image really shows how advanced Duane Michals was when it came to double exposure portrait photography. he took two relatively simple photos and when he overlapped them it turned out to be a very unique and meaningful piece if art. I would love to try and recreate this picture sometime. My favorite part of this image is the precision. What I mean by this is I love how centered the subject is, as well as how even and straight the hat being held is and how it lines up with the center of the mans nose. To me this makes the image very satisfying to look at.
The last image is also an image id love to see how he accomplished. I can't even begin to understand how he distorted the womens face like that in the mirror. This photo is so beautiful and meaningful and many have different interpretations. I can't quite decide what my final interpretation is, but im thinking along the lines of self identity. The women is internally confused and trying to figure herself out. When she looks in the mirror she sees different versions of herself. The view of what's in the mirror shows how she feels lost and overwhelmed in her own head, but is able to still look presentable on the outside as if nothing was wrong.
