Ralph Gibson

Image
Ralph Gibson's photography is mainly composed of black and white photos with high contrast. A large group of his photos are of nude people and mysterious subjects. In my opinion, the contrast adds to the mystery of most of his images. The first image leaves the viewer wondering. It has a deep black contrast with pops of white in the subject's suit. You cant see the subject's face so this leaves everything up to interpretation.  To me, it seems like the person is choosing to hide their identity. They're pulling what seems to be a hood over their face. This makes it seem like he is ashamed. I really enjoy the second photo very much. The contrast is perfect and the close angle gives an abstract effect. I think it is a very interesting point of view and definitely not something I would think to do when taking photos. This photo in particular inspires me to look at subjects differently when taking pictures. The detail in the last photo is what really makes this piece stand...

Lee Friedlander

Image
I am a huge fan of Lee Friedlander's work. All his images have such great composition, detail, and lighting. One of my favorite things about his images is the fact that each of the photos tells a story. There is so much depth and thought behind everything he creates. He works a lot with shadows and reflections which, I now know from experience, can be very difficult with a film camera. It isn't easy to create such a crisp and detailed image with a film camera and dark room. His work is very inspiring. The first image shows a reflection. I love how you can see parts from inside the glass, and the reflection. I find it very impressive that he was able to capture such great detail in the television. In my opinion, the purpose of this image is to show the scenery and surrounding of a photographer while creating their work. The reflection allows us to understand how he holds the camera, the environment he is in, and the emotions he's feeling.  The second picture is such a stor...

Michael Kenna

Image
Michael Kenna is an artist mostly known for his black and white film photos. Something I find quite amazing about Kennas work is the fact that a large portion of his photos are taken at night with a long exposure. When you first look at his images, that is not what you would expect given the fact that there is perfectly crisp detail and very defined contrast. This, in my opinion, is what truly makes Michael Kenna stand out as an inspirational photographer. The first image is taken with a long exposure over night. It shows the stars movement as the earth rotates. Ive seen this type of photography many times with digital cameras and even then it creates such a beautiful work of art. The fact that Kenna created this photo with a film camera and mastered the perfect exposure time and aperture to have such a extraordinary outcome is amazing.  The second photo is one of my favorites. I love this image mainly for the fact that the contrast of the white flower with the dark leaves i...

Adam Fuss

Image
Adam Fuss is a huge inspiration to me when it comes to film photography. His work is very simplistic while still having depth and meaning behind it. I hope that I am able to achieve photographs that appear as satisfying and meaningful as him. I love how he incorporates color,  clothing, and living creatures in his art. It is very well rounded. I also enjoy how each of his art pieces are very easy on the eye. There isn't much going on, usually just one subject and a simple and plain background. The picture on the top is such a great piece of art. It captured motion in such a still frame and everything is so crisp and clear. It almost looks as if he stopped time to take this picture. I love the abstract effect that the ripples create for this photo. The circles create symmetry which help to bring this photo to such a high level of artistic value.  The second photo is one of my favorites. I love the color in the background because it gives it the perfect mood. Every time I...

Man Ray

Image
Man Ray is a huge inspiration in the world of photography and art. He practiced many forms of art in his time, but is mostly known for his photography and photograms. Many of his pictures were portraits with some type of illusion or object incorporated in. I find this very inspiring and unique because it makes his photos stand out. My first initial thought and impression on many of his photographs aren't usually what is actually being shown. His art requires analyzing to be able to see all the sides of the story and to understand what is being portrayed.  For example, in the photo above my initial thought was a women crying. This seems like the obvious answer due to the tilt in her eyebrows, the direction of her eyes, and of course, the tears. But once I took a longer look at it I realized that tear drops on her face weren't even tear drops, they are carefully placed glass beads. This makes me wonder what the true story behind the photos is. That is exactly what I love about hi...

What Photography Means to Me

Photography has always been a huge part of my life. Ever since I was young and was being shown old pictures of my relatives and used images to learn about their legacy and importance in my family. My house has always had many framed photos of my family and we even have a large picture wall in my house used to display some of our favorite memories. Photography isn't just something I use to learn about the past, it is something I use to improve. I was a gymnast for 14 years of my life and I always felt like I could be getting better. Whenever there were certain skills that I struggled to improve on, I would bring my phone out and have my teammates or coach record or take photos of my routine so that I was able to go back and watch and look for my mistakes. This was something I did almost every week at practice and it was a huge part of why I was usually very successful at competitions. Lastly, photography is something I really enjoy doing as a hobby. I love to travel and hike and one...
